What are the National Public Safety Wellness Programs?

Comprehensive mental fitness/wellness & accountability programs for officers, administrators, first responders, and other personnel involved in the service of police/public safety/emergency response

What are the goals of these  programs?

Assist public safety personnel in maintaining mental fitness from training through retirement using evidence-based practices, surveys, accountability/personal goal setting, and  follow-up research

When and what is implemented?

There are several times when high stress levels tend to occur during a career in police/public safety (matching the times when these wellness  programs are  available):

  •   1.  During academy training/FTO evaluation/probationary period   (Peer Support Team and other special unit participation also can be included)

  •   2.  When personnel are involved in critical incidents, serious injury/illness or relationship/family problems

  • 3. When  wellness interviews are required by  agency/department policy or by legislation

  • 4.  When retirement from a public safety career is being planned and/or undertaken

  • Participants may complete up to four FULLY-CONFIDENTIAL & VOLUNTARY online surveys  focusing on characteristics needed for successful public safety job performance, positive characteristics demonstrating resilience, areas for improvement, and history of trauma/trauma reactions to critical events

  • Monthly group zoom calls for goal-setting and  individual accountability will be available for  separate groups of 1. command staff, including  executives, chiefs, directors, or administrators  and 2. public safety personnel, including line staff

Where and how is it implemented?

  •  At each person’s discretion, this program takes place in the home (or local office when available) via confidential online survey administration followed by a scheduled confidential  consultation/feedback session by telephone/ZOOM/SKYPE or, if  available, at a licensed feedback coach’s private office

  • Experienced feedback coaches who have worked with public safety personnel will be available for up to one-hour feedback  consultations

  • A list of referrals will be provided, should follow-up sessions be requested by participants

  • If desired, participants have the option of beginning a more formal process of consultation  with the initial consultant or with another consultant in private or group sessions

  • Follow-up anonymous  &  grouped results/profiles  of four surveys will be developed separately  for  command staff & line personnel

  • Organizations  can  participate  in  customized  follow-up  research  programs

  • Guided research projects open now for graduate degree theses or doctoral dissertations  (see  above menu for Student Research Projects area)
